Tea is delicate and deserves a little extra care. Whether you’re storing matcha, black tea, or pu-erh, knowing the right way to store it makes every cup taste fresh and flavorful. In this guide, I’ll share tips on keeping your teas at their best, from green teas in the fridge to fermented teas aging gracefully on the shelf.
🍵 Green Tea
First off, yes, green tea does need to be refrigerated if you want to keep its freshness for a long time. If you don’t have fridge space dedicated to tea, that’s okay! Just make sure you drink your green tea a bit quicker so it doesn’t lose its flavor or color.
Another really important tip for all teas — not just green tea — is to store them in non-clear containers. When tea is kept in a clear jar or container, it’s exposed to sunlight, air, and heat, all of which can dull the color and weaken the flavor over time.
If you leave your tea sitting out on a sunny shelf, you’ll eventually notice it turning duller in color and losing that vibrant, fresh aroma. So, always store your tea away from sunlight, in a bag, tin, or canister that isn’t see-through.
For my own collection, I keep all my green teas in the fridge and my black teas and oolongs outside at room temperature.
🍂 Fermented Teas
Now, fermented teas (like pu-erh) are a little bit different. Some people choose to refrigerate them, but generally, you should store them outside the fridge, especially if you’re trying to age the tea. These teas actually need a bit of air to develop their flavor over time.
So if you’re storing fermented tea, keep it in an airy place, but make sure it’s out of direct sunlight.
☁️ My Tea Setup
For me, I have a few tote bags full of tea (yes, it’s a lot!) and I’m still looking for the perfect box to organize them all. My green teas live in my mini fridge, and my black, oolong, and fermented teas stay in my little tea corner, which is also where I keep my teaware.
You don’t need a fancy setup, though! Just remember:
- Keep your tea out of direct sunlight
- Use non-clear containers
- Avoid moisture and strong smells
That’s it! With just a little care, your tea will stay fresh and taste amazing every time you brew it. 🌱
Enjoy tea- Jordan
