Bancha (番茶) is a traditional Japanese green tea made from the mature leaves and stems of the tea plant. It’s typically harvested later in the season after the young leaves have been picked for sencha and matcha. Because of this, bancha has a lower caffeine content and a more robust, earthy flavor, making it perfect for daily sipping.

Unlike the tender young leaves used in higher-end teas, bancha comes from leaves that have had time to toughen up. These older leaves naturally produce less caffeine, as they don’t need as much of it to deter insects. The result? A gentler tea that’s both easy to drink and easy to love.

☕️ Caffeine in Bancha Tea:

Roughly 10–30 mg per 8 oz cup (compared to ~30–50 mg in sencha and ~60–70 mg in matcha)
